political figure
Born in Paris, Charles-François-Marie, count de Remusat, was the son of Auguste de Remusat and the countess, née Claire-Élisabeth Gravier de Ver-gennes, lady-in-waiting to the empress Joséphine. He is known for his Mémoires (published 1879), which describe life at the imperial court. Remusat was a contributor to several newspapers (Le Courrier français, Le Globe) and served as a liberal deputy (1830-47) and as minister of the interior in the cabinet of adolphe Thiers. Remusat supported the republic and was proscribed after the coup d'état of December 2, 1851. He was amnestied in 1859, and later was named foreign minister (1871-73). As a deputy again, he played a part in the editing of the constitutional laws (1875). Besides his memoirs, he left works on history and philosophy. Remusat was elected to the Académie Française in 1846.
